"Mr. Suzuki" supports dormitory life at Kashiwakura Construction Co., Ltd. He is like a "father" to everyone, to whom they can talk about anything, such as work-related worries or personal problems. We spoke to Mr. Suzuki about his daily life with the Vietnamese people he works with.

相談役として気をつけていることはなんですか？

一人ひとりの性格をしっておくようにこころがけています。そうすれば、例えば悩みごとやトラブルをかかえている人がいたら、顔のひょうじょうやはたらくようすから変化に気づけるからです。また、その人にあったコミュニケーションもとれます。やさしくしたほうがいいときや、きびしくしかったほうがいいときもありますから。

性格を理解するために、どんなことをしていますか？

コミュニケーションをたくさんとっています。現場や会社のイベントなどでは肩を組んだり、「仕事はうまくいっている？」と声をかけたりもします。なかには話すことがにがてな人もいます。そういうときは、その人と仲のよい仕事なかまに「彼は最近、元気？」と聞いて、問題をかかえていないかチェックしています。もう彼らは私にとって子どものようなものですね。

生活をサポートしていて、大変だったことはありますか？

コロナ禍のあいだは大変でした。彼らが体調をくずすたびにコロナに感染していないか、検査をしに、寮へ足をはこんでいました。多いときは1週間に10回ほど寮へ行って彼らのけんこうをチェックしていたと思います。でも、ふしぎなことに私はコロナには感染しませんでしたね。

コロナに感染した人のサポートもしていたのですか？

はい。コロナにかかっていたら部屋から出てはいけないルールだったので、彼らはごはんを買いに行くこともできません。そこで、私が彼らのかわりにスーパーマーケットへいって食料を買い、部屋へとどけていました。3人同時にコロナにかかったら、3人分の1週間の食料を手にもちきれないくらいかかえて寮にいくわけです。とてもたいへんだったのをおぼえています。

これから日本で働く特定技能外国人のみなさんへ、ひとことお願いします。

日本へくると、家族のいない寮生活になります。なれない国での暮らしはきっと大変なことも多いでしょう。でも、がんばってはたらいていれば、こまったことがあったときに、会社がこころをこめてサポートしてくれるはずです。安心して日本へきてくださいね。

Suzuki-san treats the Vietnamese people living in the dormitory, sometimes kindly and sometimes strict.
It was very impressive to see him, playing the role of a father, watching over how he spent his time on set and in the dormitory.

"The Vietnamese people who work at the company are like my children," says Suzuki-san, with a gentle expression on his face, and it is clear that he thinks of them as if they were his real family.

Of course, Kashiwakura Construction is not just about Suzuki-san; everyone, including the president and senior employees, is friendly and it's a homely workplace.

Apparently, Japanese and Vietnamese people also enjoy the company's regular event of "potato digging."

There are still many companies like Kashiwakura Construction that offer great opportunities to work.
