Okasan is the president of Oka Kosan Co., Ltd. She is good friends with her co-workers not only at work but also in private. She cultivates the fields with Sinath, a Cambodian man, and visits shrines with him. We spoke to Okasan, who said, "Sinath and I are friends."

カンボジア人を受け入れた理由を教えてください。

10年以上前に、社員旅行でカンボジアへ行きました。その時に現地のガイドさんとなかよくなりました。ガイドさんから、カンボジアの人たちの暮らしを聞いて、何かサポートしたいと思い、支援活動をはじめたのがきっかけで、会社でも受入れをスタートしました。

カンボジアではどんな支援をしているのですか？

現地の児童養護施設におとずれて、親がいない子どもたちの生活のサポートをしています。また、まずしく生活がくるしい人が多い村に行って、子どもたちを食事に招待したりもしています。

シナットさんとは、プライベートでどんな付き合いをしているのですか？

私が神社をめぐるのが大好きで、シナットくんを誘って一緒に神社めぐりをしています。
神社というのは、心をきれいにしてくれる場所です。いろいろな神様がいて、手を合わせて神様たちと向かい合うところ。そんな日本ならではの文化をシナットくんも好きになってくれて、これまで30か所ほどいっしょに行きました。

畑で野菜をいっしょにつくっているようですね。

日本を知ってもらい、好きになってもらうには、日本人がやっていることと同じことをすることが大事だと思っています。シナットくんも、どんなことにも興味を持ってくれるので、自分で日本の野菜の種を買ってきては育てています。とれた野菜は、わたしの家族や会社のみんなに持ってきてくれます。シナットくんは本当にやさしい人間で、私はともだちだと思って付き合っています。

これから日本で働く特定技能外国人のみなさんへ一言お願いします。

日本にせっかく来たのなら、日本の文化にふれてほしいですね。特に、野菜づくりはおすすめです。畑をたがやしていると、日本の季節や天気、日本でできる作物などが全部わかります。そうすることで、自分の世界を広げていってほしい。機会があれば、ぜひチャレンジしてください。

I first met Oka-san, who was the president at the time, at the award ceremony for the 2021 Outstanding Construction Worker Awards. At the time, he said, "The suit that Sinath is wearing is the suit I wore when I was young," and I thought, "What a kind president he is." On the way back from the award ceremony in Tokyo, we went to the art museum and talked together. Rather than a president and employee, they looked more like parents and children or friends, and I felt that they were really close.

"Mother" says she wants specified skilled workers who come to Japan to "love Japan."
I also go into the mountains with Sinath to pick wild vegetables, and we also go to various places to play.

When I interviewed him, it was very impressive to see him working hard together with Sinath to grow vegetables.

Every year, Oka Kosan holds an event called "Takeakari" at a restaurant near the company.
Employees also helped out there, and Sinath even played the role of a ghost in a "haunted house."
It's not just about work, it's about having fun and laughing together. That's what a company is all about.

There are many such wonderful companies in Japan.
Japan's construction industry is looking for people who want to work with us.
